Paired Text Rubric



Literary Analysis
4:

·         well-focused and persuasive analysis of the topic/theme
·         specific textual supports and quoted properly
·         demonstrates knowledge of style, diction, and syntactical terms and what each contributes to the meaning of the theme in the works as a whole
·         makes a strong case for their interpretation and discusses the literary work with significant insight and understanding
·         more sophisticated analysis


3:

·         makes a good case for their interpretation and discusses the literary work with significant insight and understanding
·         reasonable analysis of the topic/theme
·         insight and understanding, but the less perceptive, and/or less specific in supporting details
·         demonstrate some knowledge of style, diction, and syntactical terms but may miss chances to specifically name and explain what each contributes to the theme and of the work as a whole
·         analysis is less thorough


2:

·         responds to the assigned task with a practical approach but lacks persuasion
·         tends to be surface and shallow or underdeveloped in analysis
·         relies on plot summary that contains some attempt to discuss the topic and how it contributes to the work as a whole
·         demonstrates a rather simplistic understanding of the work’s syntax, diction, and style
·         does not address knowledge of style, diction, and syntax and the ways that they contribute to the theme of the work unsophisticated thinking and/or immature writing


1:

·         offers a less than thorough understanding of the task or a less than adequate treatment of it
·         incomplete or oversimplified understanding of the work
·         may rely on plot summary alone
·         unacceptably brief
·         ideas are presented with little clarity, organization, or supporting evidence
·         no evidence of textual quotes
·         no evidence of style, diction, and syntax
