  1. In the beginning of chapter 3 Francis reveals that he purposely avoids eye contact with the people he knows while walking through the streets of Frenchtown - what does this suggest about his character - why do you think he behaves this way
When Francis walks through town and does not make eye contact with the people he knows this suggest that he is doesn’t want to remember his past life and after the war. Also he doesn’t want to talk to anyone and he just wants to be left alone and go on with life by himself. These actions suggest that his character is ashamed of what happened and doesn’t want anyone to remember him.
I think that Francis behaves this way because he doesn’t want to talk to anyone because the war has left such a physiological and physical impact on him that he just wants to be left alone and he doesn’t want to remember the past and what happened. I think that he is trying to move on with his old life and try to start a new one but still have the affects that the war has had on him and by acting this way people will not know him even his friends because they will not recognize him and if they see his eyes they might remember him and tell everyone that he is back and then he will be back to the life that he was trying to get over. I think this is why Francis doesn't make any eye contact with the people he knows.
