  1. There is that one thing that everyone seems to have. You seem to be the only person lacking this certain item, that has grown in popularity. This one thing may be as stupid and worthless as a rock, and you know that in a few months, the fad will be over, but you know that you want one. Lily feels this way about a charm bracelet. She wants one for her birthday. I think that one of the charms Lily would want on her bracelet would be a tiny bee. In the book, page one, it Lily says, “The bees came the summer of 1964, the summer I turned fourteen and my life went spinning off into a whole new orbit- and i mean whole new orbit.” This shows that the bees came at an important part of Lily’s life. She also seems found of these normally feared creatures. The bee charm would not only represent her interest in bees but also the part of life she was going through, and what it meant to her. Another charm that I think Lilly would have on her bracelet would be a fluffy, purple chick. This charm would portray the chick that Rosaleen gifted Lily with. In the book, page eleven, Lily says, when talking about Rosaleen, “- she loved me beyond reason. I hadn’t known this until I was eight and she bought me and Easter- dyed biddy from the mercantile.” This shows that the chick would remind Lily of Rosaleen, her beloved caretaker, who is a big and important part of Lily’s life. I think that a charm of a woman’s glove could be found of Lily’s bracelet, to remind her of her mother. In the book, page 13, Lily talks about her mother’s belongings, and says, “ The bag contained a pair of white cotton gloves stained the color of of age.” This shows that Lily’s mother, who Lily misses dearly, owned a pair of gloves. The last charm that would be on Lily’s bracelet is a book. Throughout the book, Lily mentions how she loves to read. A book charm could capture this idea.
A silver slice of moonlight lays across my arm; a charm bracelet. Each of the four charms that adorns the bracelet represents a part of me. The first charm is a book. I LOVE reading. The stories that I get lost in, the characters that I learn to love, and the adventures that I follow them on all are a big part of me. A book charm would represent this. The second charm would be a sand dollar. This charm would not only represent my love for the beach, but would also represent my mom’s side of the family and all of the fun times that we have had “down the shore”. Another charm would be a star of david. This would represent my jewish faith as well as the great times I have spent with my dad’s side of the family, celebrating holidays. The last charm would be a tree to represent my love for nature. So, that is my charm bracelet. What would be on yours?

  2. In The Secret Life of Bees, Lily asks her father if he’ll finally get her a popular charm bracelet for her birthday. Though it’s unlikely that he’ll buy her the bracelet, I believe the following charms that Lily would choose to have on her bracelet are: a book, a bee, a glove, and a peach with a nail in it. Lily would choose a book simply because she loves to read—even if T. Ray forbids it. For example, Lily shows how T. Ray feels about her love of books when she describes how a proud neighbor caught her reading while she was selling peaches. ““Saw your girl in the peach stand reading up a storm. You must be proud.” And he would half kill me.”{Page 15} Clearly, having a book on her charm bracelet would be a symbol of rebellion against her dad. So would a peach with a nail in it! This represents the hate she has for her father’s behavior. In addition, a bee represents freedom to Lily because bees fly free. Lastly, Lily would want a glove charm to simply remind her of her mother. She would no longer have to sneak to the box anymore to see what was left of her mother’s memory. Charm bracelets continue to be popular in today’s world. They are a way for girls to express themselves.
The four charms that I would want on my charm bracelet are: a book, a Havanese head, two stick figures holding hands, and a backgammon chip. The first charm would be a book with the title, Harry Potter because it was the first series that inspired me. After this series, I immediately became an avid reader. My second charm represents my love for animals—specifically my Havanese dog named Cassie. Cassie is the greatest gift I have ever received, and she can always cheer me up when I’m sad. When I come home from a stinky day of school, Cassie always jumps on me and makes me happy and loved. Speaking of feeling happy and loved, all of my friends make me feel the same and they are the inspiration for my third charm. My friends are the only part of school that I look forward to. This is because they share my enthusiasm and my sad times. I know that they are always there for me and that they always will be there for me—so is my family. The backgammon chip represents my family. One of my favorite things to do with my family is to play games. One of my favorite games is backgammon. Charm bracelets are what represent individuals in life. It’s like carrying your life around your wrist. This is why charm bracelets are so special to people.

  3. She can’t help but get her hopes up when her 14th birthday rolls around. Maybe, just maybe it would be the year that T. Ray decided to get her a gift. (Turns out, it wasn’t. Typical.) Lily was absolutely dying for that charm bracelet that she’d been seeing around everywhere. I think one of the charms that she’d like on her very own bracelet is a bee charm. Unlike most people, she doesn’t mind being around bees, and seems to actually enjoy the swarms in her room and the sounds of them in her walls. Something that Lily had said about bees was, “Looking back on it now, I want to say the bees were sent to me.” However, I’m still not too sure of what she’s referring to… I do know, that for whatever reason, Lily is quite fond of bees. Another charm Lily would get is a pencil charm, since she reveals that she is actually a huge fan of writing. She even says, “I was the only student that didn’t groan and cry out when Mrs. Henry assigned us another Shakespeare play.” The third charm Lily would get would be an angel. She knows that her mother is up there in Heaven, watching over her silently. It would almost be like a tribute to her mother’s life. The final charm Lily would get on her bracelet would be a forest tree, to symbolize the secret area where she would go to both escape T. Ray and to visit her mother’s belongings.

The first charm I’d get would be a music note, since music is one of the most important things in my life. Playing music, writing music, listening to music… They’re all equally important to me! My second charm would be an equality symbol. The fact that people just cannot grasp the concept of “I’m a person, you’re a person, and we are equals” infuriates me. I really hope that one day everyone will be treated with the respect they deserve, regardless of any differences they may have from another person. The third charm I would have would be a pencil. I love to draw, write, and just create things! Lastly, my fourth charm would be the Earth. Diversity is just so cool to me, and the fact that there are so many different cultures, languages, and customs on one planet amazes me! One of my biggest dreams is to travel to as many places as I can, and experience all that I can possibly experience. That’s what life is about, to me.

  4. Lily would defiantly want a mom, black Mary, bee, and a best friend charm. She want a Mom charm because it states in the text “I tried for a long time to conjure an image of her before that, just a sliver of something.” This shows that Lily loves her and thinks of her every day. She would have the black Mary charm because it reminds her of her mother. She would also have a bee charm because she likes bees and doesn’t mind them. Lastly she would want a best friend charm because Rosaline and she are very tight and Lily has never had someone in her life like this before.
My charms would be about my life and what I love to do. I would want a wrestling headgear to symbolize that I wrestle and that it is a part of my life. Also that I love sports and I’m athletic. I would get a heart charm because that can be to my family and friends and it shows that I love them. I would get a Italian flag combined with a four leaf clover to show my races and What I am. I would get M for Mahwah to show that I grew up in Mahwah.

  5. For her birthday all she wanted was a charm bracelet. Charms that Lily would put on her bracelet are a bee charm, a honey jar, a pair of white gloves, and a book. She would have the charm of a bee because they would fly around her room at night and she was mesmerized by them. The honey jar because that's what she had put the bee's in and when she opened the jar, a voice spoke to her, "Lily Melissa Owens, your jar is open." She would have the pair of white gloves because her mother wore white gloves. Lastly, she would have a book because she loves to read and write.
Four charms that I would want on my bracelet are a volleyball, the Eiffel Tower, a music note, and a sun. I would have a volleyball charm because I love to play volleyball and I have a lot of good memories playing it. The Eiffel Tower charm because I really want to go to Paris and I love to travel and see new places. A music note because I love my music. I can't go anywhere without it. Music makes me happy and I can relate to a lot of songs. Lastly, I would have a sun because I would want that to remind me everyday to shine bright and really be good-hearted person. The charm would be a reminder as to the kind of person that I want to be; bright and sunny!

  6. If Lily got her charm bracelet for her birthday, the four charms she would have are a charm that says ‘mom’, one that has a picture of the black Mary, a Tangerine, and a bee. She would definitely have one that says mom on it because her mother died when she was little. “She was all I wanted and I took her away” this shows how much she misses her mom. So she would get a charm so she could never forget about her. She would definitely have a charm of the black Mary. “Looking back on it now, I want to say that the bees were sent to me. I wanted to say that they showed up like the angle Gabriel appearing to the Virgin Mary.” This shows how important the bees were to Lily, she says they were a gift that someone had sent her. The first time she saw them she knew something special had happened because she was amazed at the bees as they flew around her room. Lily would have one of a tangerine because she lives on a tangerine farm. That is where she grew up so she would always want to remember that, no matter how bad life was there. Lastly she would have one of the black Mary because she felt something special when she saw it. Lily said, “The end-all mystery inside the bag was a small wooden picture of Mary, the mother of Jesus.” She was so interested in this picture she would always think about how her mother got it and why.
If I had a charm bracelet my four charms would be a charm that says family, one that says friends, one of a lacrosse stick, one that says Mahwah. I would get one that says family because my family is very important to me, and I’m very close with all my family members. I would get one that says friends because my friends are a very big part of my life. I don’t only hangout with them, I play sports and go to school with them. I am around my friends a lot each day. I would have a charm with a lacrosse stick on it because lacrosse is my favorite sport, and I love to play it. I play with all my friends, and I even got my sister to play. In the spring and summer I spend a lot of time playing lacrosse. Lastly, I would have a charm that says Mahwah on it because Mahwah it is my hometown. I have lived here all my life, and I love it here. Every one is nice and Mahwah and it is a very safe town.

  7. Lily does not lead a charmed life. In fact, even her dream of attending charm school is denied because she "didn't have a mother, a grandmother, or even a measly aunt to present me (her) with a white rose at the closing ceremony" (9). Lily misses her mom dearly and would want a charm bracelet that reminds her of her mother. Lily cherishes those few items of her mom's that she found in the attic and the vague memories that she has of her mother. Lily would have a perfume bottle on her bracelet because her mother wore perfume. "The moment she lifted me up, I was wrapped in her smell" (6). Every time Lily would look at the perfume bottle charm, she would be transported back to that moment and could almost smell her mother's sweet scent. T. Ray tells Lily that her mother "was buried in Virginia where her people came from" (13). Therefore, Lily would have a charm in the shape of the state of Virginia. In this shape, Lily could almost visualize her mother and perhaps a grandmother or aunt. Lily would want a charm in the shape of a pair of gloves because Lily discovers "a pair of white cotton gloves stained the color of age" (13-14). Lily thinks, "Her very hands were inside here" (14). When Lily would look at this charm, she could almost feel her mom's hands on her, giving Lily a loving embrace. Lily would also have a charm in the shape of a bee because bees are Lily's connection to the mystery that surrounds her mother. "The sound (of bees) swelled in the dark until the entire room was pulsating, till the air itself became alive and matted with bees" (4). When Lily would look at the bee charm, she could imagine that the sound of the bees is her mother humming her a lullaby. Charms that remind Lily of her mother would give Lily a sense of hope.
Just like Lily, I would have a charm bracelet that is centered around my greatest love: reading. I have a fondness for books and always feel more comfortable with one, just like Lily, who "was the only student who didn't groan and carry on when Mrs. Henry assigned us another Shakespeare play" (15). Each charm would represent a favorite book. First I would have dangling from my wrist a charm of a train. This train would represent the Hogwarts Express from the Harry Potter series. The next charm would be a sparkling gold bow and arrow, which symbolizes The Hunger Games. The bow and arrow is the weapon of choice for the main character, Katniss Everdeen. My third charm would be three birds to represent the book Divergent. This would represent Tris's tattoo that she got to remember her family she left behind. The final icon finishing my devotion to books would be in the form of a brain. This brain exhibits the passion I have for knowledge, which I absorb from all kinds of non-fiction books. Unlike Lily who didn't lead a charmed life, these tiny metal replicas remind me that I do indeed lead a charmed life with my journey through books.

Lily stated that she would like a charm bracelet for her birthday. If she were to get some charms for her bracelet, it would probably be a bee, a jar of honey, a gun, and a key. She would want a queen bee to represents the beekeeping job she has with August. The jar of honey would represent the way she got the job with August and the way that she found her. The gun would represent her mother’s death, not exactly the happiest thing to have with her but I think it would make her feel better by having a piece of her mother with her. And lastly a key, to represent the key that she is trying to find back into her mother’s past.
If I were to have a charm bracelet, the charms I would put on would be a guitar, a game controller, a TV and a computer. The guitar would represent my love for music and my guitar. The game controller would represent my love for video games. The TV would represent the amount of TV I watch (Which is a lot) and the computer would represent my love for technology and computers.

  10. Lily is a sweet, secretive, brave girl. Lily is also a leader. Lily’s birthday is coming up and she has asked T-Ray for a charm bracelet. In my opinion I fell like Lily would like to have a bee charm, a crown charm, a honey jar charm, and a bird. The bee charm would represent her because in the beginning of the story it shows how lily was catching bees in a jar to prove t-ray wrong. The crown charm would represent being a leader, just like a queen bee. On the first page of chapter one, the man and insects say “The queen, for her part, is the unifying force of the community; if she is removed from the hive, the workers very quickly sense her absence. After a few hours, or even less, they show unmistakable signs of queenlessness.” The queen bee is in charge of the whole beehive, just like Lily is in charge of most things that have happened in her life. The honey jar charm represents the time that Lily and Rosaleen have been staying at the Boatwright’s, and how much they had learned while they are there. Finally, the bird charm represents lily running away from home to find who she is. I think these charms best fit Lily’s personality and I feel like lily will love her charm bracelets with these four charms on it.

  11. Week 2: Option D Charm Bracelet
Every girl whether she is 5 or 15 wants a charm bracelet as some point in her life. Lily was just like those girls. “I was just thinking I would love to have one of those silver charm bracelets they have down at the mercantile.” Said Lily on page 21. Lily loved the bees that would swarm her room every night like said on page 4 “ A person could get stung half to death in a roomful of bees…Still the sight was a true spectacle.” Therefore one of the charms would be a bee. Next I would give her a hairbrush charm. Lily always says her hair is a mess all the time. I would give her a charm with the date her mother passed away. Therefore she could always carry her mother around with her. Lastly I would give her the charm of the world, to show her that no matter how hard things got she always had the world at her finger tips.
If I were to receive a charm bracelet I would want four charms a soccer ball, a seashell, a heart the color of a ruby, and a starry night charm. The soccer ball is because I love soccer and it is the only sport that I play. The seashell represents the beach. I love the beach it is my favorite place in the world to be. Also whenever I am there I forget about all the bad in life and focus on the good. The heart charm would represent my mom because she has a necklace that is a ruby heart with symbols representing my dad, brother, and I. Finally I would want a starry night charm because it would give me something to always wonder about. It symbolizes that there is always something new to discover. Charm bracelets have so much meaning to so many people in the world, because they symbolize so many amazing and inspiring things.

A small clink fills the room, and to Lily’s ears, it’s almost like music. The sound of her four dainty charms reminds her of her struggles and her happiness. Each charm represent a different part of Lily’s life, and the soft “cling” of the charms hitting the desk only remind Lily of her life’s treasures and memories. Unfortunately, the soft clang of the charms against the desk was a dream that Lily sadly awoke to. As Lily lay in bed, staring at her empty wrist (with no charm bracelet), she thought about different charms dangling on a dainty bracelet that would suit her personality and life. Four different charms I believe Lily would have appreciated would be a Virgin Mary, a bee, a writer’s pencil, and a small locket charm, tiny enough to fit a small photo of her mother, and perhaps Rosaleen too. Lily would value a charm of the Virgin Mary, because it would remind her of her mother and Rosaleen. As it says on page 14, “inside the bag was a small wooden picture of Mary, the mother of Jesus. I recognized her even though her skin was black, only a shade lighter than Rosaleen’s.” Lily is referring to a bag full of her mother’s things, and if she was to have a charm of the Virgin Mary on her charm bracelet, it would remind her of her mother, and also Rosaleen, because the photo found in the bag of Virgin Mary had the same skin color as Rosaleen. Lily would most likely also want a charm of a bee, considering bees are constantly around her in her room, and it’ll remind her of the bees she caught to show T. Ray. Lily might also want a writer’s pencil, because Lily enjoys writing. On page 16, it states, “I planned to be a professor and a writer of actual books.” Lily takes pleasure in writing poems and such, and she would appreciate a small charm representing her love for writing. The last charm I believe Lily would like is a small locket charm – small enough to fit a photo of her mother and Rosaleen. Rosaleen and her mother are two of the most important people in Lily’s life, and having small photos of them would keep Rosaleen and her mother close to her wherever she goes.
Although Lily only dreams of having her own charm bracelet, I’m fortunate enough to have my own. Months ago, I selected a few charms that each represented who I am and what I hold dear to my heart. As it states on page 21, “…giving people a guided tour of your charm collection.” Charms in my charm collection include a Mickey Mouse charm, a seashell charm, a music note charm, and a key charm. I was given the Mickey Mouse charm when I went to Disney with my family, and it always reminds me of the wonderful trip I took with some of the most important people in my life. The seashell charm matches my cousins, and we bought them together at the beach we stay at every summer. It’s a charm that always helps me remember my cousin, considering I only see her twice a year. The music note represents how I enjoy music, and I bought it at a music store. The last charm is a key, and my friend has a matching heart with a little lock on it. The two charms go together and keep our friendship “locked up and safe.” It’s amazing how such dainty objects can have so much meaning and memories behind them.

  13. If you could get a charm bracelet with whatever four charms you wanted, what would they be? Would you pick literal things, or something that has symbolic meaning to you? In The Secret Life of Bees, Lily Owens asks for a charm bracelet for her fourteenth birthday. In my opinion, I think Lily’s four charms would be a bee, a book, a pair of white gloves, and a moon. The bee symbolizes the secret bees that lived in her room that seemed to have a life of their own and a deep meaning for Lily. It would also remind her of August, May, and June and working with the bees. The book represents her love for literature and her dreams for the future. “’Do you have any idea how smart you are? You could be a professor or a writer with actual books to your credit. Beauty school. Please.’” This remark was said to Lily by her teacher. It gave her hope that she could actually do something when she grew up. The pair of white gloves would represent Lily’s mother, Deborah, since she owned a pair just like them. Lastly, the moon relates to her dream about telling the truth and the moon shattering and falling from the sky when she told the truth. It would be there to remind her where “Our Lady” lived and to keep innocent at heart.
If I were to get a charm bracelet with four charms the charms would be a softball, a Volkswagen beetle, a smiley face, and a star. The softball would be there to represent something that I love and could continue to do, like Lily’s book and love for literature. The Volkswagen beetle would remind me of the memories I made with my friends that I would never forget. This is similar to Lily’s mother’s gloves because it reminded her of the past so she would never forget them. The smiley face symbolizes happiness and keeping a positive attitude even when things go wrong. Finally, the star represents hope for a good future and my dreams. It would also be one of my charms because it would remind me of theatre and all of the memories it contained. This charm is also like the book because it kept hope for the future.

  14. A charm bracelet holds a story. The thin, silver chain bonds the stories together. Each charm shows you a story, a characteristic of someone. Each charm bracelet has been molded and delicately changed to fit into a person’s life. If Lily received a charm bracelet her four charms would be a bee, a Virgin Mary, honey, and a cross. All of these charms represent important things in Lily’s life. The black Virgin Mary is a symbol of her mother. Lily had found objects of her mother’s and one of them was a black Virgin Mary. This plaque represents her mother and her past. A bee is important to Lily because they gave her the hope and courage to leave T-ray and find more about her mother. After the jar was open, she knew she had to leave. As the text says, “I heard a voice say, Lily Melissa Owens, your jar is open.” Just like the bees, she knew she had to fly away and be free. Honey is important to Lily as well because she likes it. Every day at August’s house she works with honey. It has become a daily ingredient for her life; honey water, honey foods, and even honey lotions. A cross would also be important to Lily because she is very religious. Every day Lily prays with Rosaleen, May, June, and August. Even back in Sylvan she went to church. This reminds me of a book. The charm bracelet is like a book because the both tell a story. Each charm tells a story about that person; a small part about them, just like a book.
There are many things that make up a person’s life. Hobbies, family, friends, and personalities. These elements describe a person; they make up who a person is. If I had a charm bracelet my four charms would be goggles, a cross, a musical note, and a four leaf clover. I would choose goggles because I swim and it is very important to me. I would choose a cross because I am religious and a cross is part of my religion. I would also choose a musical note because I enjoy music. I listen to music everyday and also play an instrument, so music is a big part of my life. Finally, I would choose a four leaf clover because I am Irish, so that makes me who I am. My heritage is Irish, so this four leaf clover describes me. My heritage and background make me who I am, and what I look like. For example, Lily has certain characteristics that make her stand out from others. As the text states, “My hair was black like my mother’s but basically a nest of cowlicks, and it worried me that I didn’t have much of a chin.” This description of Lily makes her Lily Owens, not any other person. This reminds me of the book Divergent. This book talks about characteristics of people. These characteristics make them who they are, just like Lily and everyone.

  15. If Lily were to receive a charm bracelet for her birthday, she would have a bee, honey, a peach and a heart that says "mom" on it. Lily would have a bee because bees swarm in her room at night. She lays in her bed and watches the bees fly around. "Right now it's enough to say that despite everything that happened that summer, I remain tender toward the bees." A jar of honey, because the Boatwright sisters took Lily and Rosaleen in. The Boatwright sisters make honey and sell it in stores and other states. A peach because she sells peaches and her father grows peaches. A heart with the word "mom" in it because it would be like she can bring her mother with her everywhere she goes. Like her mother didn't really leave. Lily misses her, so it would be something to always remember her by wearing that. Those are the four charms that Lily would want on her bracelet.

If I were to have a charm bracelet, I would pick a volleyball, a heart that says "family", a pumpkin and a paw print charm. I would pick a volleyball because I love playing volleyball. It's the one sport that I really like to play. A heart that says "family" would be because my family is everything to me. With my parents, my brothers and all my other relatives, I have an amazing family. We are always there for one another, and I don't know what I would do without them. A pumpkin because my dad calls me his pumpkin. The nickname has been around since I was a baby. For the last charm, I would pick a paw print because I love animals. I don't like hearing stories about animals being hurt. I like almost every animal. So, these are the four charms I would choose, if I had a charm bracelet.

  16. Week 2: Option D Charm Bracelet

As Lily’s birthday approaches, she figures, why not ask my father for one of those silver charm bracelets they have down at the mercantile? If Lily did receive a charm bracelet for her birthday I think Lily would get four charms. The four charms would consist of a bumble bee, a peach or peach tree, a heart and a box. The bumble bees would symbolize the bees Lily claims to be swarming around her room at night, and how she captured the bees and left them in a jar close to her. Now if she left the house or stayed away from the bees for a while, they would still be with her in a way. The peach orchard would resemble how she always goes to the peach orchard when T-Ray goes to sleep. Page 22, Lily quotes, “I wanted to lie down in the orchard and let it hold me.” This is a sign that Lily is comfortable in the orchard, and holds it close to her. With a charm of an orchard to resemble the peaches and the comforting feelings Lily has when she is there can symbolize something that is important to her, and that she keeps close to her heart as well as the fact that she keeps her mother’s box in the orchard. The heart on Lily’s charm bracelet would resemble the love and companionship Lily has with both Rosaleen and her mother. Both of the women have made a huge impact on Lily, and having a heart on her bracelet could remind her of the love she shares and receives from both of them. Last but not least, the box would remind Lily not only is her mother always with her, but all the things that remind her of her mother. Lily’s box that she keeps in the orchard holds many things that her mother had. The box could have Lily remember her mother is always with her and so are her possessions. Many people have things to motivate them or to resemble things. For example, some people who are catholic or religious and go to church might wear a cross necklace symbolizing their religious beliefs or that someone is always with them. Maybe a charm bracelet could be a similar way to symbolize things important to her.

If I had a charm bracelet it would include things that symbolize things that are important to me. There are many things that are important to me, but if I had to choose four to put on my charm bracelet it would have a soccer ball, a music note, a heart, and a sun. All four of these charms are important to me mostly for the reasons they are things I love or things that symbolize and mean a certain meaning to me. The sun would make me think of always be happy and positive. Whenever I think of a sun, it reminds me of happy, bright and gleaming, all things I try to be. This would remind me to have a positive attitude at all times and to always try to be the nicest I can to people and shine down on others. A heart would remind me that I am surrounded by people who love me, and I have many strong relationships as well as important people in my life, such as friends and family. A heart could also mean to keep going. For example in the most difficult times I would try to find a way to move on just like a heart continues to keep beating as long as it can. A music note would mean a few things to me. First of all, I am very musically talented because I play some instruments and can sing and it plays an important role in my life. Music also lets me release thoughts and feelings. A soccer ball would resemble my passion for soccer. Soccer is my favorite sport and I have played it for many years. It’s something I love so I would want something to resemble my love for my favorite sport.

  17. Four charms Lily would want on her bracelet are a bee, a journal, a black Mary, and a pair of white gloves. A bee because she sees them everyday while she's helping August and Zach take care of the bees. A journal becuase she wants to become a write. A black Mary because her picture is on the honey jars, and was also on a picture that was previously her mothers. A pair of white gloves because her mother once had a pair, just as mentioned on page 13, "The bag contained a pair of white cotton gloves stained the color of age. When I pulled them out, I thought, Her very hands were inside here."

If I were to get a charm bracelet, I'd want the charms to be very meaningful, like they would be for Lily. So the four charms I'd have on my bracelet would be, a little charm of Taiwan, a violin, a pencil, and a music note. A little charm of Taiwan because that is where my mom came from, along with where a great amount of my relatives are currently residing. A violin because I love playing and have been playing since I was seven. A pencil because I love art. I love drawing and stenciling and designing. A music note because I love music. I love listening to music, playing music, and dancing to music. It takes away stress and from previous research, music improves memory as well as, helps the brain retain more information, which helps students improve their grades.
