  1. August compares the world to bees by saying that the whole world was one big bee yard. “She reminded me that the world was really one big bee yard. Don't be afraid. Still, don't be an idiot. Don't swat. Don't even think about swatting. Anger agitated, whistling melts the bees temper. Act like you know what you're doing, even if you don't. Above all, send the bees love. Every living thing wants to be loved”. To clarify, August means that you should not hurt the bees in any way because they just want to be loved.

“Bee yard etiquette” has impacted the characters in the story so far.May starts to sing ‘Oh Susanna’ and goes to her wall when she needs to calm down. “…But to bring up an unpleasant subject…May would start humming “Oh! Susanna”. It seemed her personal way of warding off crying”. Rosealeen and lily show love after Lily’s mom died. Also when Lily lies to the Boatwright sisters, she acts like she knows what she is doing.

  2. August compares the world to the bees and their bee yard etiquette by teaching Lily that just like the world and its need for rules in order to have successful community living, so do bees. She says as much when she reminds Lily that, “…the world was really one big bee yard, and the same rules worked fine in both places….” Some of these rules included bravery, intelligent choices, don’t use violence, and find ways to get rid of anger that don’t hurt others. She added to these rules, “Act like you know what you’re doing, even if you don’t.” and August believes that the most important rule is to love. August is showing Lily that, just like people, bees follow rules that make living successful and happy.
Bee yard etiquette has affected the characters in both positive and negative ways depending on whether the characters follow the (bee) rules. For instance, Rosaleen isn’t afraid, even after three white men beat her. August seems to be no idiot. She knows all about how to deal with bees and people. When May gets upset, she doesn't use violence. She sings, writes letters and puts them in a wall. When August describes how May behaves, she says, “It’s like we have a built-in protection around our hearts that keeps the pain from overwhelming us.” August means that May’s built-in protection starts with humming, but at least she’s not hurting someone else. Lily clearly acts like she knows what she’s doing, even if she doesn't. She may be lying, but it helps her survive. Lastly, everything is tied back to love. But without the rules, love, and can’t be shown. Love, and all of the rules of the bee yard etiquette, has affected the characters.

  3. When teaching Lily about “bee yard etiquette”, many of the things August is teaching her about bees also apply to people. Although the actions of bees and humans are not exactly the same, they have similarities. On Page 92, Lily says “She reminded me that the world was really one big bee yard, and the same rules worked fine in both places.” This shows that the things August teaches her can be used very often in life, not just at the bee yard. When August tells Lily, “Don’t be afraid… Still don’t be an idiot…” She is talking about how to act around the bees in order to prevent getting stung, but that advice can also be used when interacting with people.
Many of the characters in the book have used “bee yard etiquette” in the real world. One example is Lily and Rosaleen. They go to stay in a stranger’s home without being afraid, but they make sure to work hard there in order to keep them from looking like they are lazy and careless. This was shown on Page 82 when Rosaleen says “This ain’t charity, I’ll pay it all back.” As a result of their working hard, and not being scared to show up at August’s, they received a place to stay. This proves that not only will “bee yard etiquette keep you from getting stung by bees, but it will also help you while interacting with people.

  4. The sun shone, painting the fields below in a subtle golden hue. Bees buzzed as well, their sound as sweet as the sun’s resplendent light. The hum of bees in a hive, is not all that different from the hum of a vehicle in the streets of a town. When around bees, the same rules apply to that of being around humans. August says, “Don't be afraid, as no life-loving bee wants to sting you. Still, don't be an idiot; wear long sleeves and pants.” This is August’s advice to lily on bee yard etiquette. This basically means that one should not be fearful in life, yet they should also not be overconfident. In the bee yard, this means that you do not have to run away terrified from bees, but you also shouldn’t mess around like nothing bad can happen. In the human world, this means that you shouldn’t live life afraid, but you still need to be smart about it. A great example of when someone did not follow this life philosophy is when Curley tried to fight Lennie. Curley was abiding by the “don’t live afraid”, but he was not smart about it. He fought someone bigger and stronger than him without a good reason, and he paid the price for it.
Wind howled and rain pounded the overpass. Lily and Rosaleen clung to each other, each in an uncontrollable shiver, hypothermia just minutes away. Lily and Rosaleen did not have to experience homelessness because of August’s belief in how bee yard etiquette should be transferred to the human world. August tells Lily, “Above all, send the bees love. Every little thing wants to be loved.” August’s belief in love is what made the Boatwright sisters take in Lily and Rosaleen. If it hadn’t been for that, who knows how the novel would have unfolded. Lily and Rosaleen could have been found by T-Ray. They could have even been put in jail! Love is very powerful in the novel, from the bee yard to the human world. I predict that August’s belief that everything should be loved will be tested. When she finds out Lily has been lying to her, it will be hard for August to send Lily love.

  5. August compares the world to bees by saying that the same basic rules apply for both. Always act kind, and act like you know what you are doing. August says in the novel, “She reminded me that the world was really one bee yard, and the same rules work fine in both places. Don’t be afraid, as no life-loving bee wants to sting you.” This gives a basic introduction of bee yard etiquette and how the rules can work in the real world as well. All one has to do is simply remove the bees and replace it with humans, and the rules are active for human life. However, not all “bees” are life- loving. Many people take their own lives, thus “stinging” those around them. This case holds to be true with April’s death, and just how much it affected May.
Bee yard etiquette has impacted the characters in the novel greatly. Or perhaps, the lack of bee yard etiquette from T-Ray has been the biggest factor. A basic rule in bee yard etiquette is that every little thing wants to be loved. T-Ray may love Lily, but he certainly has not shown it. It is likely that if T-Ray had followed bee yard etiquette, Lily would not find herself in the situation that she is in. The author states,” I mean my father was Thomas Edison when it came to inventing punishments.” This quote provides clearly how T-Ray violates bee yard etiquette. Many people in this world also go around breaking the simple rules that August has provided. People beat their children every day, just how T-Ray punishes Lily on a daily basis. Hopefully in the future, the culprits of child abuse, including T-Ray, will realize what monsters they truly are.

  7. What is bee yard etiquette? Bee yard etiquette is basically how you should act when you are with bees. August compares the world to bees by saying the whole world is one big bee yard. According to page 149 it states “Don’t move an inch, said August. “Remember what I told you. Don’t be scared.” This is the proper bee etiquette because being calm is a key skill to show proper bee etiquette. Not only does not showing fear show bee yard etiquette, but making sure you don’t swat, know what you’re doing and sending them love is an important part. Having bee yard etiquette is like having table manners. A prediction can be made that in the future Lily will be experienced with bees and will have excellent bee yard etiquette. This is what bee etiquette is and how August compares the world to bees.
How has “bee etiquette” affected the characters of the story? An essential part of Bee etiquette is staying calm. In the book, May can never stay calm because her emotions overwhelm her when she hears bad news. In the story it states “All the bits of paper you see out there stuck between the stones are things May has written down-all the heavy feelings she carries around.” This shows how the wall helps May let her feelings out. May is like a cry, waiting to happen. A prediction can be made that May will always stay this way. This is how characters are affected by “bee etiquette.”

  8. August compares the wowrld to bees because the world is like one big bee yard to her. "Send them love and evrything will be fine." August is saying that if you don't bother the bees and instead love them they will be alright. In order for the bees to be okay and not sting you, you have to be kind, and getle with them. Don't try to swat them away or get angry with them. All you have to do is send them love.

"Bee yard etiquette" has impacted the characters of the story. In order for May to stop crying she starts to hum "Oh! Susanna". The sisters will have to send her off to the wailing wall where she can calm down and get her emotions out. "She said if you kept things on a happy note, May did fine, but bring up an unpleasant subject - May would start singing 'Oh! Susanna'." This was how May tried to calm her emotions.

  9. August compares the world to bees. She says the world is one big bee yard. Thepeople are the bees and the world is the bee hive. Yet everyone needs to do their part and carry out their jobs, because like a clock if one thing stps working the whole clock shuts down. 'Bee yard etiquette' is how you should behave when you go by a hive, and when your near the bees. In the book there is the quote, "...Don't be afraid,as no life-loving bee wants to sting you." This means you should not act scared. You should where long sleeves and long plants and also not act like an idiot. Don't swat the bees because if your angry it will agitate the bees and make them angry. August also said you should whistle because it lowers the bee's temper, and "Above all, send the bees love." She said you should love the bees because every bee wants to be loved. This is "bee yard etiquette".

"Bee yard etiquette" impacted the characters in the novel so far because Lily wants August to send her love so she could keep her forever. Just like all bees want to be loved and that is part of bee etiquette Lily is a bee and wants to be loved. Lily doesn't want to go back to Sylvan with cruel T-Ray. She doesn't want to go back to all the bad memories and loneliness she just really wants to stay in Tiburon. The bee yard etiquette impacted August by letting Lily stay at her house. "Who's gonna take them in if we don't- a white girl and a Negro woman?" August gave Lily and Rosaleen love because she knew no one else would take them in. If August didn't follow the 'bee yard etiquette' an send them love, Lily might have went back to Sylvan. This could have prevented her from getting all of the love andfinding out information about her mother, and prevent her from discovering herself. This is how “Bee yard etiquette” has impacted the characters in the story.

  10. Bee yard etiquette is a way of treating the bees and, also a set of rules that occur in society. August compares the world to bees by saying that humans and bees are the same. Don't threaten them, send love to them, and do not intrude. Don't be stupid and start fights you don't need to, "don't swat". Act like you know what you are doing even if you don't, and love all give love to get love back.

"Bee yard etiquette" has impacted the characters in the novel so far. Lily acts like she knows what she's doing when she lies to August, June and May. August sends Lily and Rosaleen love even though she somehow knows that they are lying about the reason they are in Tiburon. Also, Neil gives June love even though she refuses to marry him. She wants to be loved and she wants to love back, but she's just too afraid, just like Lily is afraid to tell August that she loves her.

  11. “The world is a one big bee yard,” reminds August. The rules of a big bee yard can be applied to the world. “Don’t be afraid… still, don’t be an idiot… If you feel angry, whistle. Anger agitates, while whistling melts a bee’s temper… Above all, send the bees love. Every little thing wants to be loved.” This essentially means that you shouldn’t be afraid, but you should still take precaution. You should not be angry because anger causes more anger, but instead do something pleasant. Show affection toward everyone. This is bee yard etiquette, but it is also Earth etiquette. In the bible, Jesus says, “Love your enemy as yourself.” This is very similar to the bee yard etiquette. If one checks closely at the bible, one can find out very similar rules that are set by Jesus. This proves that bee yard etiquette can be applied to the world.
Rosaleen was agitated at Frank Posey, the most racist man in town. Frank and his gang discriminated her because of her skin. She, after many offensive comments, finally burst and added oil to the fire. Rosaleen poured tobacco snuff on Frank’s foot. Frank got so infuriated. Bee yard etiquette had impacted the lives of the characters in the book by having the characters suffer from not following the etiquette. Rosaleen got beaten up multiple times for showing her anger and agitation. “What if [T. Ray] was home missing me saying, Why oh why didn’t I love [Lily] better?” This reveals that T. Ray showed a very small portion of love, if not at all. T. Ray faced the consequence because he of all people should have loved Lily with all his heart, yet he only showed anger. Lily ran away from T. Ray. T. Ray only lost from not following the bee yard etiquette better. As long as one follows the bee yard etiquette, it is very improbable that you will suffer.
