Week 2: Option E Philosophy of Life

Prompt:
On page 16, Lily mentions how she wrote, "My Philosophy of Life" for a school assignment.  The author, Sue Monk Kidd, also had to write one when she was a little girl--maybe that's where she got the idea.

Response Requirement:
Use QASI/RATE when addressing each bullet (each bullet requires its own paragraph).

  • Based on what we know so far, what is Lily's philosophy of life?
  • Explain your own philosophy of life.

  1. Everyone lives differently. Everyone has their own way of life. And Lily’s, I think is that life is different everywhere, but it’s hidden and you need to look deep into the world to figure that out. On page 63 it states “I realized it for the first time in my life: there is nothing but mystery in the world, how it hides behind the fabric of our poor, browbeat days, shining brightly, and we don’t even know it.” And the only way to figure those mysteries out is to stop living the life someone wants you to and to live the life you want to live. In Harry Potter, Harry was always abused and was supposed to stay a normal human even though a lot of strange things were happening to him and he didn’t understand what, it was a mystery to him. When finally he learned what he really was, he lived a completely different life because he was someone so different in the wizarding world. And like Lily, it took a little looking into to figure it out.
In real life everyone has a philosophy of life I guess. Mine is to try to stop being shy and try and take risks. Look for new things. It reminds me of when Lily was pleading for a sign like it stated on page 60 “Lily Melissa Owens, your jar is open... Whatever my eyes lighten on, that’s my sign.” It feels like it fits because people want to live slowly and step by step even though life goes to fast for that. In the book Amulet, after Emily’s mother got better from the monster’s venom, her mother wanted to go back home, turn their back on the people who need help from the evil king’s grasp. Emily said she’d stay because she’d protect the people with her life. It’s obviously not something I’d do but it’s a big risk and I want to stop shying away from risks. And like Lily there’s always going to be a mystery and there will always be a journey to solve it.

  2. Today in our society, we are supposed to treat everyone fairly. In Secret Life of Bees, people were not treated fairly. There were some people that treated every the same and one of them was Lily. Based on what we know so far, Lily’s philosophy of life is to treat everybody fairly. Lily has a fill-in mother that is black and Lily treats her with respect, unlike everybody else. Rosaleen is as lucky as a four-leaf clover because she has someone that treats her with respect. On page 62, Lily says, “I’ll take two of them and two Coca-Colas.” Lily is buying lunch for a Rosaleen. A white women using her earned money for a black person. This was extremely odd back then because most people didn’t treat black people fairly, but Lily did because that’s her way of life. During the Holocaust, many Jews needed a place to stay, and no one would take them because they were Jewish. These people are like the white men in Secret Life of Bees. Some generous families decide to take them in, and they were like Lily.
Coaches always say, “Work hard and you won’t regret anything if you lose.” This means that when you don’t work as hard as you can, you will always regret it and say to yourself that you should’ve work harder. My philosophy in life is to work hard and give back. I believe this because if you work as hard as you possibly can, you can achieve anything. When you do that, you should not brag, only be humble. This will make everyone happier because when you give back it makes you feel good, and people who are less fortunate will get things and be happy. I think Lily is also following this philosophy because she is working hard in the peach stand and giving back to Rosaleen. In the story, Rosaleen asks for more snuff. Lily is nice enough to get her some and give back. Bill Gates is probably the richest man ever, and he is very humble. He donates so much money to charities around the world. He worked so hard to get to where he is and now he is giving back to the less fortunate. He is following my philosophy in life.

  3. Week 2, Option E
Based on what we know so far, I believe that Lily’s philosophy of life is to be courageous and stand up for what you believe in. She shows these qualities a few times through the book. One major time in the book where she demonstrates this is when T. Ray had driven her back from the town, after Rosaleen had been arrested. T. Ray and Lily begin to get into a heated argument. Lily tells him that “My mother will never let you hurt me.” He tells her that her mother never loved her, and that she had left not only T. Ray, but Lily as well. Lily doesn’t believe this, and openly defies T. Ray, for what seems to be the first time in my life. This part of the book reminds me of a quote I once heard. “This particular quote stated “Courage of my conviction”. It means to stand up and pursue what you believe in. Lily, by standing up to T. Ray and believing that her mother truly did love her, shows her “courage of conviction”.
I would say that my philosophy of life is to live life to the fullest and enjoy every waking moment that you can. I feel that life is too short. As a person who is still a teenager, I sometimes can’t help but take a moment to look at my parents, even grandparents, and think to myself “I’m going to be that age one day”. As I am right now, it might not seem like I’ll be that age anytime soon, but as I’ve heard from many people, time flies. One can only imagine all the things that are possible in life. If the average human spends about 8 hours sleeping every day, which means that 1/3 of their life is spent sleeping! That’s a huge portion. If you don’t enjoy every moment that you can, life will zoom on by like a racecar. When you live it to the fullest, you can BE that racecar, and have a great life.
