  1. The “Wreck” center, to most people was a place of bad luck. Originally it was known as Grenier’s Hall, which was a place for dances, weddings, parties. It was a happy place until the wedding of Marie- Blanches Touraine, when everything went wrong. At the wedding Marie’s ex-boyfriend came in and shot Marie and her new husband, Dennis. Marie was killed and Dennis became paralyzed. According to the text on page 39, it states “That was the end of Grenier’s Hall as a festival gathering place. The doors were sealed and the windows shuttered.” When Francis was in 7th grade the halls began being transformed. When the workers finally completed the job, they named it the Frenchtown Rec. Center, for that is what the hall has now become. But, that night someone replaced the sign with Wreck center. And even though the sign was eventually replaced, the place was forever known as the Wreck center to the people of Frenchtown for the bad memories it brings. Today, there are many places with bad memories but none have ever shut down like Grenier’s Hall. Two for example, are Sandy Hook Elementary School or Garden State Mall. Even though none of these places became known as the “Wreck Center” they still bring bad memories to some people.
What will the Wreck center later have to do with the story? Everyone has their own opinion but I think it will have to do something with Nicole and Larry. The wreck center was built the year Nicole Renard came into Francis’s life. Larry LaSalle owns the wreck center. Larry taught Francis how to be a table tennis champion which got Nicole’s attention. The text states on page 62, it states “Nicole touches my shoulder, her hand both tender and caressing, and my flesh burns with the echo of her touch. ‘Good luck,’ she said” This shows that Nicole noticed him and took the time to say good luck. I think that later in the story, Francis will go visit the wreck center and find Nicole and Larry there. He will find out the truth about where Nicole has been, and will be able to complete his mission of killing Larry. In the real world, Larry is somewhat like a murderer. He is targeting one person to kill without anyone knowing he is going to kill him. In the end, I think the wreck center will continue to bring happy memories with Nicole but also bad memories with Larry.

  3. The Wreck Center is a place of tragedy. “The sound of weeping and moaning could be heard if you pressed your ear against the front door.” Before becoming a dismal place, it was known as Grenier’s hall. It held dances, weddings, and holiday parties. It was always known as a happy place, until the wedding of Marie-Blanche Touraine. As she and her groom cut the cake, her ex fiancé ruined it all. As stated in the text, “Hervey burst into the hall, a gun blazing in his hands. A moment later, Marie-Blanche lay bloody and dying in her wedding gown.” This was the end for Grenier’s hall. One day it was transformed into Frenchtown Rec. Center. Later, someone crossed out rec, and replaced it with wreck. This is ironic because Grenier’s hall was a place of tragedy, and people tried to make it into a place of happiness. Instead of being known as a fun place of recreation, people refer to it as the wreck center, a place of destruction. Additionally, rec and wreck sound the same, but have very different meanings. The wreck center is in some ways similar to the titanic. The titanic was a place of fun and happiness, until it sunk, and became a ship wreck.

Why is the rec center such a big deal in the book? That is because it foreshadows something bad is inevitable to happen. As stated in the text, “it’s a bad place, people had said… A place of doom, others have added.” The book describes the Wreck Center after its transformation as a Great place for Francis. “The wreck center became my headquarters in the seventh and eighth grades, a place away from the sidewalks and empty lots of Frenchtown.” So if the wreck center is a good place for Francis, why does Francis tell himself, “I will not visit the Wreck Center, there is nothing to gain by going there.”? That is because something bad will happen to Francis there. Something bad enough to turn a place he loves into one that he hates.

  4. In Frenchtown, there is a building called the “wreck” center. This is ironic because something horrible happened there. When Francis was young, a wedding took place there. One person was shot and killed, and the other person was shot and paralyzed. On page 39, it stated, “…A moment later, Marie-Blanche lay bloody and dying in her wedding gown. A bullet entered Denis O’Brian’s spine, leaving him paralyzed for the rest of his life.” I can relate to this because once, I was enjoying myself and then something bad happened. In camp, I was having a fun time, playing ping-pong, and the next minute, I had sprained my ankle.
Based off of the name of the building, I can predict that something bad will happen there. I predict that the wreck center is where Francis will achieve his mission. On page 41, Albert Laurier says “It’s still a bad luck place.” Many places in the world are said to have bad luck. For example, the Riddle house in Florida is claimed to be haunted. Also, Leap castle is rumored to be haunted by a lot of spirits, like the “wreck center”

  5. Who would ever imagine a Rec. Center actually wrecking someone’s life? There is irony in the spelling of "Wreck" Center. The Center was originally known as Grenier's Hall and was a place for festive gatherings and other opportunities for recreation. The happy times were wrecked at the reception of Marie-Blanche Touraine. Marie-Blanche and Dennis were creating a new life for themselves as a married couple, but Hervey Rochelle, Marie-Blanche's former fiancé, shot the newlywed couple. For several years, the place lay abandoned until construction people gave the hall a makeover. A new "sign that read FRENCHTOWN REC. CENTER" (41) was hung above the entrance. The idea of bringing the Rec. Center back was to make people happy by giving them a place for recreational activities. However, "That night, someone crossed out the words on the sign and replaced them with WRECK CENTER" (41). Even thought the Rec. Center is supposed to be a positive place, the people of Frenchtown still believe it's a bad luck place and have negative feelings towards it.
Is there more bad luck in store for the people of Frenchtown? The people of Frenchtown still think the Wreck Center is a bad-luck place, which foreshadows that more bad luck is to come. Joey LaBlanc angers Francis when Joey says that "he could feel that old doom hanging over the place" (46). Joey must have been right. Something bad must have happened at the Wreck Center because readers learn that Francis wants to kill Larry LaSalle. "I think of the gun in my duffle bag and I'm impatient for him (Larry LaSalle) to come back" (49). Larry must have done something horrific to Francis at the Wreck Center and Francis wants revenge.

The “Rec. Center” really became a “Wreck” after the murder that occurred on that one unforgiving day. In the new spelling of the “Wreck Center” has irony in its spelling. The irony is that Rec. and Wreck is pronounced the same, and that calling it a “Wreck” is saying it is a wreck after all that has happened. One quote that supports me is found on page 39, it states, “A moment later, Marie-Blanche lay bloody and dyeing in her wedding gown.” This means that this once amazing place, it was as popular as coke-cola, but now, after this person dying there, it is now called “Wreck” because it is a wreck. Another quote from the text that supports me is found on page 41, it states “It’s still a bad-luck place.” This means that to everyone, it is still bad luck, or a “Wreck”. I love irony, especially ones with names. This relates to whenever I see newspaper headlines because the titles are always fun and witty, just like the “Wreck Center” which was the “Rec. Center”, because Wreck and Rec. are both pronounced the same, but have completely different meaning.

Already, the Rec. Center is becoming a Wreck in the book. I predict that the Rec. Center will have many bad assurances, given the fact that it is called the “Wreck” Center and the fact that already multiple bad things have happened there. One quote that supports me is found on page 38, it states “It’s a bad luck place.” This means that bad things happened here, reoccurring, and that it keeps happening again here. Another quote that supports me is found on page 39, it states “Marie-Blanche lay bloody and dyeing in her wedding gown.” This also supports me because it shows that people have died there before, and there is a good chance it will happen again. This relates to the “Bermuda Triangle” because both these places has had a series of bad luck, and people both call these “Bad Luck”.

  7. The “Wreck” Center is an abandoned recreation center in Frenchtown. People have said that the Wreck Center is a bad place, a place of doom. It use to be a Grenier’s Hall in the old days, and then something tragic happened. First it started of as a happy place that celebrated all different events, for example gala dances or fancy balls for occasions such as New Years Eve or Weddings. At one wedding a tragedy happened. Marie-Blanche married Dennis O’Brien, right after Marie divorced Hervey Rochelle. When Marie and Dennis were cutting the wedding cake, Hervey busted through the doors and shot both Marie and Dennis. Marie died but Dennis had been paralyzed the rest of his life, and later that night Hervey committed suicide. Since then the Rec. room has been abandoned ever since. Basically the irony behind the Wreck Center is that it was wrecked on that day and that incident wrecked a lot of people’s lives. The Rec. Center has literally been wrecked.
I predict that this may foreshadow an incident that has to relate to Larry LaSalle and why Francis wants to kill him so badly. Maybe something similar happened to Nicole and Larry.

There is a lot of irony behind the spelling of Wreck Center instead of Rec Center. Rec is usually means recreational activities. But in this case, they used wreck which implies destroying something. Francis remembers it as a place of wreckage to him as he says in the book, “…There is nothing to gain by going there...” He also said that it would be as useless to go there just as useless as visiting Nicole’s house would be. This shows that Francis doesn’t want anything to do with the Wreck Center and that it means nothing to him probably from his deep hatred of Larry LaSalle and his wanting to kill him.

This could foreshadow to the end of the story because maybe he comes back to the wreck center and “wrecks” Larry LaSalle. Although it is just an assumption of mine, I think that there is a possibility of this happening. Why else would he call it the wreck center anyway? Maybe Francis isn’t as loving as we thought he was and is actually a murderer. Although it may sound ridiculous that he would be a murderer, it would never be impossible for him to be a murderer.

  10. Have you ever wondered in the book Heroes a building would be called a Wreck Center and not the Frenchtown Rec Center? The irony behind the name the Wreck Center was that it was originally, known Grenier’s Hall until a tragic event happened. Francis stated on pg. 39, “It had become a traditional place for wedding receptions, the bridal party marching the length of Third Street to the hall after the wedding mass at St. Jude’s’.” It was a place to celebrate happy occasions until the wedding of Marie-Blanche Touraine. Marie Blanche married a handsome Irishman by the name of Dennis O’Brien from North Monument after she broke an engagement to Hervey Rochelle, the shipping room foreman at Monument Comb Shop. At the reception, during a pause between dinner and dancing as Marie-Blanche and Dennis cut the wedding cake, Hervey burst in with a gun and killed Marie. A bullet paralyzed Dennis’ the spinal cord. Hervey then hung himself. The Rec Center was then shut down until it was transformed and reopened as the Rec Center. This reminds me of what happened on September 11, 2002 when the planes crashed into the World Trade Center. It had been the center of world business and the world largest building. Innocent people were killed because of terrorists trying to get revenge on the United States for promoting freedom. There was a lot of controversy over whether it should have been rebuilt. It is now named the Freedom Tower. People will not forget what happened to the World Trade Center and people could not forget what happened at the Wreck Center. The Center however looked unfinished because it wasn’t fully painted and the shutters sagged.
It’s a stormy night in front of the Rec Center.
John says, “Hey you want to become legend?”
    “Yah”, says Joe.
“Let’s paint the Rec Center the Wreck Center”, says John.
“Okay, it looks like a bomb hit it anyway”, says Joe.
It looked like a “wreck” and one night it was repainted “Wreck Center” in big red letters. The irony was that the center was a wreck because of the shootings and hanging, the building looked like a wreck because the work was haphazard, and it was “still a bad-luck place”, which foreshadows something bad happens again.
What could the name the Wreck Center foreshadow for the rest of the story? Joey LeBlanc predicted doom for the future of the Wreck Center. On pg. 38 it states, It’s a bad-luck place, people had said.” If doom can happen once, chances are it can happen again. For example, the Jews were held responsible for the Bubonic plague and Hitler tried to blame them for the Depression in Germany. History repeats itself. My prediction about what will happen at the Wreck Center is one of doom. I predict that Nicole and Francis will get married. Boom! Wham! Bam! Gunfire will kill Nicole and Francis will kill Larry with the gun in his duffel bag in the Wreck Center. “It’s still a bad luck place,” says Albert Laurier on page 41. Here’s how this event would take place and why the name the Wreck Center would be fitting.
“Francis do you take Nicole to be your lovely wife.” “I do”, Francis says.
“Nicole do you take Francis to be your husband.” “I do”, Nicole says.
“Larry what are you doing here”, Nicole asks?
“Nicole you didn’t marry me, so now you will die”, Larry says.
“I am dying, Francis”, Nicole says.
    “LARRY”, Francis shouts!
    “What”, Larry exclaims!
    “Die”, Francis says.
    “Nicole, Nicole”, Francis says.
This somber prediction is foreshadowed by the past doom that happened at the Wreck Center and on pg. 46 when Joey says, “Doom”. “Wait and see.”

The irony behind the spelling of the of the Wreck Center is that instead of having wreck spelled “Rec” (as in Recreation) it is spelt as “Wreck” (as in to destroy) . The Wreck Center was originally meant to be a place of recreation for others, but due to the a tragic even that had taken place there its spelling and meaning of the word has changed. In the book on page 39 Francis states, “The hall had been a place of happy events-gal Year’s Eve and the fourth of July It [the Wreck Center] became a traditional place for weddings receptions, the bridal party marching the length of Third Street to hall after the wedding mass at St. Jude’s…” This quote shows how at first the Wreck Center, was actually more of a rec, or recreational center after all unlike the post-spelling of wreak (emphasize the different spelling and meaning) . People had spent time there together, held events, and had fun there, which showed that it was a good place and had acted as a rec or recreational center. However after one fateful event everything had changed so suddenly. In the book on page 39 Francis states, “… Until the wedding of Marie-Blanche Touraine… At the reception, during a pause between the dinner and the dancing, as Maire-Blanche and Dennis [Her husband] cut the wedding cake, Hervey [Her ex-boyfriend] bursts into the hall, a gun blazing in his hands. A moment later, Marie-Blanche lay bloody and dying in her wedding gown. A bullet entered Dennis’s spine , leaving him paralyzed for the rest of his life. Hervey hung himself that evening …” All of these events together are like a disastrous vortex, destroying everything yet leaving the rubble behind. At the Wreck Center two people were killed, one was parlayed for the rest of their life. A very different image than a recreational center isn’t it? Lives and that event were ruined or “wrecked” on that day which is why they call it the Wreck Center. It shows how the place was originally a recreational center (Rec center) but due to the catastrophic event that took place, it has destroyed its image which is why people use the homophone of Wreck to categorize it, which is what makes it ironic. In my opinion I believe that that the people of Frenchtown should not call the place by the name of the Wreak Center but proceed to call it the “Rec Center”. That event had only happened, and there were no other tragic recorded events that had taken place there either. It did not have to be shut down but still continue to be a place where people could have fun and relax.

A prediction about what this(my previous answer) may foreshadow for the rest of the story is that another tragic event may have occurred at the “Wreck Center” as well. I do not say now because obviously the Wreck Center is closed and bordered up to the public, but something after the “bloody wedding” that had taken place, may have happened. In the book on pages 38 and 39, Francis states. “ “It’s a bad-luck place” people had said. “ A place of doom” others added”. From these comments others had said, that generally view the Wreck Center negatively and as a bad place. From all of these negative views one may conclude that since it is a bad place, and since it is a bad place something bad is bound to happen there in result. However not only is it a bad place for the people in Frenchtown, but Francis as well. In the book on page 32 Francis states “ I tell myself I will not visit the Wreck Center, that there is nothing to gain by going there just as the visit to Nicole’s house on Sixth Street brought back only loneliness and regret…” This quote shows and compares Francis’s feeling when he goes to the Wreck Center and Nicole’s house. He says that he will gain nothing from visiting the Wreck center, just as when he goes to Nicole’s house all he gains is lowliness and regret. This shows how not only will gain nothing from going to Nicolas house but he gains regret and loneliness from going to the Wreck Center as well. This may possibly be due to an event evolving Francis and Nicole at the Wreck Center, since he is comparing his feeling to her house. However since he displays negative feeling on the Wreck Center it also emphasizes and foreshadows the fact that something bad may have happened at the Wreck Center involving him and Nicole. With all of these negative things said about the Wreck Center, it is like a prison, a place bad thing happen and are. However I do not think that anything bad will happen at the Wreck Center throughout the story. Just as at has an ironic name, “The Wreck Center”, I believe something good will happen, such as a wedding (that doesn't go bad), at the Wreck Center, that will occur there. That way the name of the place will be even more ironic than it was originally intended to be.

    Bella Orlandoni

In the novel , Heroes, the town that the main character Francis lives in has a rec-center. In the book, they spell it “Wreck center”. Obviously, this is extremely ironic and symbolizes something. The author writes about how the “wreck center’ is a bad luck place. Ever since a wedding that ended with a bride getting shot by a jealous gunman, the wreck center has been a “place of doom”. “Wreck” obviously is ironic because of the tragedies and destruction that has happened here. It seems to be quite common, giving nicknames to a place where something tragic happened. For example, D- Day (the day in World War II where allied forces invaded northern France by invading the beaches of Normandy) has caused controversy because some people believe the “D” in D- Day stands for devastation because of the many lives lost and the amount of devastation caused that day.
I think the term “Wreck Center” may be foreshadowing events in the future. Something tragic has already happened there, but I believe the wreck center is mentioned because there is going to be yet another tragedy coming up in the story that takes place in the rec center. In my opinion, I think something between Nicole and Francis will take place in the wreck center. Foreshadowing events by showing a place where other events have taken place is a commonly practice tragedies by authors, I read a different book in which a boy threw a rock into a haunted river and saw his brothers reflection in the ripples of the water, not his own. Later on in the story, his brother drowned in the river.

It’s ironic that the Rec. Center is called the “Wreck Center” because Recreation stands for a happy, enjoyable experience. On the other hand, “Wreck” makes me think of a run-down, old, depressing and abandoned place. The Rec. Center wasn’t always a “Wreck.” On page 39, it states that, “The hall had been a place of happy events—gala dances and fancy balls to mark occasions like New Years Eve and The Fourth of July.” The happiness ended with the tragic wedding of Marie-Blanche. After that wedding, the place was sealed and no one returned for a long time. It started to turn from Rec. to Wreck. It was considered, “a bad-luck place….” After it was transformed, Francis found comfort there. In fact, on page 43, Francis says, “The loneliness of the tenement drove me to the Wreck Center after school and on weekends.” What he liked the best about the Rec. Center was watching Nicole Renard dance. As stated on page 46, “Nicole Renard’s visits to the Wreck Center made my life there complete.” The center started out as an enjoyable place, became abandoned, than became pleasant again. It makes you wonder if the Rec. center will ever meet tragedy again.

I predict that when Joey LeBlanc tells Francis that the place is doomed it’s a foreshadowing for the rest of the story. Even though Francis is angry at Joey when he says, “Doom,” he pronounced. “Wait and see,” he too thinks that maybe the place is doomed. The Doom could possibly lead to another tragic event taking place at the Rec. Center. It could also hint of the possible deconstruction of the Rec. Center. The story begins with content boys who become damaged men by war. The Doom aspect could have hinted the deconstruction of Francis’ face. Like the Rec. Center, their lives have been “wrecked” in different ways. The Rec. Center represents their lives. It goes through stages of good times and bad times—just like the men. Since the Rec Center is a place that the guys can escape to now, it makes you suspicious of the Doom that everyone talks about. Will something bad happen to the Rec. Center now?

    ReplyDelete
  15. On page 38 where it says “The wreck center is boarded up and abandoned now, the words Frenchtown rec. center faded and barley visible above the front door. The door’s red paint has turned a faint sickly pink…” this described the irony behind the spelling of the wreck center because the wreck center is literally a wreck from what it used to be. The rec. center was a nice place in which people would celebrate special events. Marie- Blanche was supposed to get married there but a guy came in and shot both Marie- Blanche and her husband, Denis O’Brien.
Foreshadowing will come into play for the rest of the story, this may foreshadow that someone may appear good and friendly, but then start to shed their true colors and show people how mean or twisted they are. “…I realized that he was letting me win…He cleverly missed my returns by what seemed like thousandths of an inch…” this suggests that Larry likes being friends with Francis and doesn’t care if he loses “The score stood at 20-19… I finally looked at him, saw his narrowed eyes. They were suddenly inscrutable…the ball came to my side, a breathtaking shot that veered to the table’s edge…” but in the end the walls come down and show your true colors about a person and what they really care about.

  16. The murder of Marie Blanche couldn’t be buried, no matter how hard anyone tried. Grenier’s Hall would forever be a place of doom and gloom. “It’s still a bad luck place.” A drug store owner had stated, even after the building had been redone. The gruesome incident had ruined the center... Or you could say, “wrecked” it. The reason why the small community of Frenchtown began referring to the new Rec Center as the “Wreck” Center is because of that lingering bad feeling one would get while near it. Standing in the same room as where a murder took place… Unnerving, right?

Something so abysmal could never be hidden beneath a layer of sloppy fresh paint. The bad energy of Grenier’s Hall would always remain. “…The building still looked unfinished,” according to Francis. Though renovations were technically complete when he noticed this, something was still off about the hall. I predict that since Marie Blanche was shot in the center, maybe Francis will shoot Larry there as well. Immoral things will definitely take place there, if not the shooting. In real life, when one experiences a traumatic event, small details remind them of it; a smell, an object, a place. In this case, it would be a place. These things trigger emotions and feelings of the time. This is similar to the inhabitants of Frenchtown, because whenever they are near the “Wreck” Center, they feel a sense of uneasiness in their bones. A place like that could make the blood in your veins run cold.

The Rec Center is spelled “Wreck Center”; the irony behind the spelling of the “Wreck Center” is that it is a bad luck place. Marie-Blanche Touraine broke her engagement off to Hervey Rochelle before marrying Dennis O’Brien. The wedding reception of Marie-Blanche Touraine and Dennis O’Brien was held there at the Rec Center before it was called the “Wreck Center”. As Marie-Blanche and Dennis were cutting their wedding cake Hervey busted into the hall were the reception was held and gun blazing in his very hands. Marie-Blanche laid all bloody and dying on the ground her wedding gown. Dennis O’Brien was shot and the bullet entered his back/spine and he was paralyzed for the rest of his life. On page 39 it says, “That was the end of Grenier’s Hall as a festive gathering place. The doors were sealed and the windows shuttered.” This was the end of the Rec Center. It says on page 41, “That night, someone crossed out the words on the sign and replaced them with Wreck Center in bright red paint.” Even though the sign was soon restored back to the “Rec Center”; everyone of Frenchtown knew it as the Wreck Center still. This relates to all puns. Puns are a play of words. They either have different sense/definition of the same word. Sometimes they have similar sense or sound of two different words. An example is dear and deer. They sound the same, but they have different senses. One is used in a letter to someone and the other is an animal.
My prediction is that what happened at the Wreck Center will foreshadow the rest of the story. I think Francis will come back and meet Nicole at the Wreck Center and Larry LaSalle will come and come gun blazing and kill Nicole and injure Francis. Francis was injured by trying to save Nicole, but he couldn’t. My prediction is that Francis will go back and get Larry and kill him once and for all. In the end my expectation is that Francis will actually kill Larry then himself. So Francis will commit suicide so no one knew who he was and why he did it to Larry. Also so he wouldn’t go to jail for what he has done to him. On page 38 it says, “It’s a bad-luck place, people had said.” I think this has to do with everything that is happening and what is going to happen in the future of the story. This relates to what Hervey Rochelle did at Marie-Blanche Touraine and Dennis O’Brien’s wedding. After doing his business at the wedding he hung himself in the toolshed that evening that it was done. This relates to what murders do, they kill people then kill themselves (sometimes). In criminal shows this always happens, the murder kills the victim then when they are found they commit suicide.

The Rec Center is spelled “Wreck” Center.
o Explain the irony behind the spelling of the “Wreck Center” (instead of “Rec Center”).
o Make a prediction about what this may foreshadow for the rest of the story.
The irony behind the spelling of wreck center has a lot of meaning. the reason that they call it the wreck center is because the center was very old and had a bad paint job and was deserted. When all the men came and fixed it up it was still crummy looking until Larry Lasalle came and made the spirits better every one had
fun there until Larry left for the war it turned into a crummy place again and being located in the middle of town it looked so bad compared to everything else.
I think that in the rest of the story something bad happens there and the term wreak center is truly brought out and has some significance to the beginning of the story and calling it the wreak center because of the way it looked and the emotion that go with it

  19. Journal Entry 2: the first option

The irony behind the spelling of the "Wreck Center”, instead of the Rec. Center is that the Recreational Center was meant for pleasant things, but it’s considered a “bad luck” place, so it was renamed the Wreck Center. Overall, the Rec. Center’s purpose was a place for children to entertain themselves and to have fun. But, ever since a bride was shot in the building before it was remade into the Rec. Center, it was considered bad luck. Even after its new name and makeover, locals still associated it with unpleasant vibes. Wreck and Rec. both sound the same, and Wreck seemed to fit the attitude of the building better. Even the building itself was built in a dangerous way. On page 41, the book states, “It’s still a bad-luck place…that night, someone crossed out the words on the sign and replaced them with Wreck Center.” This shows that the irony behind the change in names is that one associates the building with bad-luck and a place of doom. The Wreck Center reminds me of a place I know. The SI Dome is an indoor soccer field. My team used to play there, we would always lose or one of us would end up getting hurt in games or practices that were held there. Our team came up with a new name for the bad-luck soccer field. We called it the Sigh Dome. We decided upon the name because we would always sigh in sadness or hatred when we had to play on that field. Its name also has irony behind it like the Wreck Center does.
The prediction I have about what this may foreshadow for the rest of the story is that Francis is going to be hurt or see something bad in the Wreck Center. After all, the Center is bad luck and things can go bad very easily. It’s just a matter of time that Francis is going to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and end up in a situation of bad luck at the Wreck Center. In the book, it states, “It’s still a bad-luck place, Albert Laurier of Laurier’s Drug Store said. People nodded in agreement, remembering the wedding reception.” This shows that the Wreck Center will always have a bad luck vibe and history proves it. In the past, bad luck happened in the Center. Therefore, Francis probably will endure that same bad luck that the Wreck Center beholds. On the news, I remember hearing about a man who stole from a local store. They caught him, and he paid the price and met his punishment. After his consequences were over, he stole again. And after that, again and again. He couldn’t change the fact that he would always steal no matter what. Just like how the Wreck Center can’t change the fact that it holds bad luck. And with Francis always at the center, it’s inevitable that he experiences some of that bad luck as well.

  20. As a child you deserve at least one place where you can go to have fun and still feel safe. For the children in Frenchtown that one place was the Rec Center. At first it was used called Grenier’s Hall and used for “happy events, gala dances, and fancy balls.” Says Francis. Many people of all ages had fun times while they were there. There is a lot of irony behind the name the Rec Center. The center was called the Wreck Center ever since the wedding of Marie- Blanche Touraine. The man who she broke off her prier engagement to came in during her wedding party. He was holding a gun and shot Marie leaving her dead and her husband of only a few hours paralyzed for the rest of his life. Ever since the tragic event the people of Frenchtown refer to the Rec Center as the Wreck Center.
Grenier’s Hall now being called the Wreck Center it was very obvious that bad things are going to occur there. I think that with the history this building has had more bad things will happen there. In the people of Frenchtown’s eyes Larry LaSalle was “a teacher, leading classes in dancing, arts and crafts, organizing a choral group, and directing musical shows.” He was as resplendent as a diamond. But most important he reopened the Wreck Center for the people. In a way all that he has done for the children was too good to be true. He brought Francis out of his shell and closer to Nicole. But nothing that good can last forever so I predict that something disappointing will happen soon at the Wreck Center.

  21. Oh the irony as Francis walks past the “Wreck Center.” There is a reason why the rec center isn’t spelled correctly. The rec center in Frenchtown actually is a bad luck place. On page 41, we learn that the “sign that read Frenchtown Rec Center slid from its place above the front entrance until it hung at a drunken angle above the door.” Initially, it was a recreation facility but someone spray painted “Wreck Center” and the name stuck. This shows that bad things will happen in this building. Even the original sign didn’t stay in place. I can relate this to language arts classes because kids tend to spell words like these wrong at a young age and just like the “Wreck Center”, both of these things can be considered very differently.
At this point in the book, there have only been fun times and activities in the building. I think the name foreshadows something that will happen to tear the community apart and change things forever just like a car wreck. On page 41, it states that a man named Albert Laurier says “It’s still a bad luck place”, and when he said this people nodded in agreement around him. I agree with the people in Frenchtown that this place is bad luck, but I feel because they think something bad is going to happen that something bad will occur at one point. This wreck center is like the country in the Hunger Games because it was once a peaceful and loving place, but once the capital came into power, their world became a dangerous disaster just like I think is going to happen to the “Wreck Center.”

  22. The rec center is call the wreck center because the was a murder their. The wreck was a killing at a wedding. And know its condemned. The irony is that the wedding was wrecked. Then the kids came up with it so its a pun.
That the killing of Larry will be their. So another Wreck will be there. So the hero Performed their and will die their. Or It will open again.

  23. The Liberty Bell, a bell that symbolizes the U.S.’s freedom from all nations that is supposed to ring forever, is broken and has never been able to ring. The irony behind the “Wreck” Center is the fact that physical state of the building is a mess or a wreck. On page 40, the text states “But the work was haphazard.” This shows that the renovations were put up in a disorderly manor, because of that it the building would turned into a dump after a few years. This reminds me of when so many people lost their homes to Hurricane Sandy. Some houses were destroyed not only because of the sheer power of the storm, but how they were built. Those homes and the “Wreck” Center both turned into dumps because they were built without organization and hard work.
In 1814, in Washington D.C., the British stormed the city and burned down the White House. This caused Americans to think “Does the White House have good or bad luck?” After pondering that thought Americans decided they would put the past behind them and rebuild the White House. American’s had to forget the bad memories and create new ones just like Francis has to do about the Wreck Center. I predict that the “Wreck Center” will be place where Francis either brings back bad memories or a place where Francis will have terrible luck, unless he tries to overcome the bad luck and turn it into good luck. On page 38, the story says “It’s a bad luck place.” This idea of it being a place of bad luck will linger with Francis every time he goes near it, or thinks about it. I do think that Francis can overcome the bad luck as long as he tries to. This reminds me to the movie “The Sandlot.” In the movie the kids associate a dog and an old man who live beyond the field as evil. This changes however once the y meet the dog and old man. The kids realize they aren’t evil at all. The Wreck Center is like the old man beyond the field, they will always be seen as bad, until you try to meet the man or make the place, a place of good luck.

  24. The irony about the rec. center being called the “wreck center” is that the wreck center got its name due to past events that occurred there. Francis explains this by saying, “the rec. center, or as most call it the Wreck center because so many events occurred…that it is now a mess”. This reminds me of the boards on the ice rink at development camp in the movie miracle. This once brand new facility now had blood stained puck marked walls that looked very old and out dated.
I predict that this foreshadows that in the book something involving a big plot twist between Larry and Francis’s relationship will occur at the “wreck center” that may be a murder or fight. Francis says “It's amazing that the heart makes no noise when it cracks.” I think this quote will describe the murder in the wreck center that I predict. It will be silent, but will result in death. Very similar to in a scary movie, Mama, where a ghost creature snatches a dad and he dies immediately without making a sound.

  25. “BANG.”
Within moments, another life was taken. How easily it was for Hervey Rochelle to pull a trigger, killing his old love, Marie-Blanche and her fiancé, Dennis O’Brien, right in the middle of the Grenier’s Hall. Within years, the scene of the tragic event soon became known as the Rec Center, but as effortless as it was for Hervey to pull the trigger, it was just as easy for the Rec Center to be renamed the “Wreck Center.” As the text states on page 41, “remembering the wedding reception of Marie-Blanche Touraine…someone crossed out the words on the sign and replaced them with Wreck Center in bright red paint. Although the sign was restored to its original wording, the place was known ever since as the Wreck Center.” The reason the Rec Center was later known as Wreck Center was because when the death of Marie-Blanche occurred, it became known as a horrible place. A place full of bad-luck and unfortunate events. Because such a tragic event happened there, it become known as the Wreck Center, a place where wreckful things can happen.
Events such as Marie-Blanche’s death are the reason everyone misjudges places/areas, and leads them to call these places things such as the “Wreck Center.” However, in the text, on page 41 it states, “It’s still a bad-luck place.” From this quote, we can infer throughout the rest of the story horrible events are going to occur in the Wreck Center. Perhaps this is the place where Francis kills Larry. When you have someone local, such as Albert Laurier, saying the Rec Center is still a bad-luck place, we understand why the Rec Center is considered the “Wreck Center,” and unfortunate events are most likely going to happen there. Most humans are extremely paranoid about places once a disastrous events happens there (such as the Newtown school shooting, because most students were skeptical to go back to school there), because they’re afraid another incident will transpire there. We can foreshadow that because one horrible event happened at the Wreck Center and it’s considered a bad luck place, that more terrible incidents will happen there, maybe even another death.

  26. The Rec. Center is commonly spelled the Wreck Center because it was built in a very haphazard manor. On page 40, paragraph 2, Francis says in a flashback, “the work was haphazard. Workers dropped hammers, spilled paint, stumbled, and occasionally pulled brown paper bags from their pockets and took quick gulps from hidden bottles.” The irony of it is that since it was built expediently by reckless workers, it was called the Wreck Center which is a pun because it was named the Rec. Center, and Wreck and Rec. have different spellings, but sound the same. The effect of this work was that the Rec. Center still looked unfinished. There were patches of mildew that had not been painted over, and the window shutters sagged.
I think that the haphazard construction of the Rec. Center will lead to an event like the collapse of it. On page 41, paragraph 2, Francis says “When it was completed, it still looked unfinished. The white paint didn’t completely cover patches of mildew, and the shutters sagged next to the windows.” If there is mildew or water damage to the walls, who’s to say that the beams in the walls won’t have water damage or rot as well. Also if it says the workers were taken slips from hidden bottles and stumbling as they were working, they might have been drunk. If they were drunk one of them could have measured something wrong or left errors that could jeopardize the integrity of the building structure. I predict that the Rec. Center will collapse and actually become the “Wreck” Center. This reminds me of when the garment factory in Bangladesh collapsed due to flaws in the building structure. The vibrations of the machines inside literally shook it apart, killing 1200 workers. These workers could have been spared since cracks were discovered the day before but the garment workers were still required to come to work.

  27. As the wedding of Marie-Blanche Touraine and Dennis O’Brien took place, Marie’s old husband, Harvey Rochelle, burst in with “a gun blazing in his hands.” The two newlyweds had perished in the Frenchtown Rec. Center. This caused the destruction of the Center as a festive gathering place. It was a wreck. The irony behind the spelling of the “Wreck Center” instead of the “Rec” center is how the Rec center became a wreck and the similar sound between rec and “wreck”. For example, on page 38 of the book, Heroes, it states, “The Wreck Center is boarded up and abandoned now.” This demonstrates the center was a wreck in appearance like a haunted house you see in movies. Moreover, it says on page 39, “In the old days [Frenchtown Rec. Center] had been known as Grenier’s Hall…A moment later, Marie Blanche lay bloody and dying in her wedding gown. A bullet entered Dennis O’Brien’s spine, leaving him paralyzed for the rest of his life. Hervey hung himself that evening in the toolshed behind the comb shop… That was the end of Grenier’s Hall as a festive gathering place.” This reveals that people’s life was wrecked in the “Wreck” Center. It also says in page 39, “A place of doom, others add.” This reveals that the center will “wreck” one’s lives. This reminds me of the book, The Son’s Ray. In the book, there was a son of a blacksmith during the time when the “Black Death” roamed around killing many around the world. Everyone lost all hope and there was only darkness, until the son decided to help the sick and tried to cure and care them. People called him “The Sun” when they called him the son before. This directly shows a relationship between the Rec Center and the “Wreck” Center.
The irony behind the “Wreck” Center may foreshadow that Larry LaSalle ruined Francis Cassavant’s life at the “Wreck” Center. It states in page 38, “[The “Wreck” Center is] a bad-luck place, people had said.” This reveals that the place seems like it has a curse casted by Harvey and that something bad might happen again like Larry ruining Francis’s life. Moreover, it says in page 47, “He could fell that old doom hanging over the place… I turn away from the “Wreck” Center, knowing that poor Joey LeBlanc, who died on a beach on Iwo Jima in the South Pacific, had been right after all.” This demonstrates that something terrible happened that made Francis think there was doom hanging over the “Wreck” Center. It can be inferred that the doom is related to LaSalle ruining Francis’s life. I think that the Larry LaSalle will tell a rumor about Francis to Nicole in the “Wreck” Center, which will lead the relationship between Nicole and Francis to ruins like any ancient civilization. Larry will take Nicole as his girl and Francis witnesses this also in the “Wreck” Center.

  28. The irony behind the spelling of the “Wreck Center” is it is a rec center and it kind of foretells of the wreck that happened there. Before that it used to be Grenier’s hall until a treacherous event happened. One day a wedding took place, then all of the sudden a man stumbled in and let lose a series of gun fire. When the panic ended the traumatized crowd found the bride in a blood covered wedding dress, and a paralyzed groom. From that point on Grenier’s hall was to be considered cursed. After that turn of event it got changed into a rec center. ““It’s still a bad luck place,” said the drug store owner, and everyone agreed that it was.” That same night the rec in rec center got crossed out on the sign and was replaced with Wreck so now everyone knew that it really was cursed and the place was a wreck. In a popular TV show; Bones they have an episode that reminds me of the wreck center. The episode starts off with a relator showing a house where the wife had recently died and that’s why the husband was selling the house. Yet the whole time the customers think that there’s something wrong with the house. Shortly thereafter they go up to the master bedroom and find a dead body proving that the place was a wreck, then they go solve the murder… This is like how the wreck center is finally shown to be cursed and considered a wreck.

I predict that this will foreshadow an event that where someone close to Francis will be maimed in some way at the wreck center or even Francis himself have something bad happen to him. While someone gets injured such as maybe Nicole, Larry wont do anything to help her and blames the problem on Larry and Francis. After that Francis will lose his shot at Nicole Renard and hate Larry la salle. “I remain sharp at all times incase Larry should walk in,” this tells us that Larry did something to him that effected his life and it can also have to deal with a time that he dishonored him and Nicole. This reminds me of how in the movie October Baby she returns to the place where her birth mother had a failed abortion (Grenier’s hall). Yet when they get there the place is abandoned and run down (wreck center). This shows how it went form being a happy place (Grenier’s hall) to a sad place (rec center) to a cursed place (wreck center).
