Journal #3: Option A

Reading Journal 3 (pgs. 73-103)

On pages 84 and 85, Francis shares that he burns up Dr. Abrams’ address and phone number in his kitchen sink. Next, he burns up a list from Enrico, detailing possible hospitals in which he planned to live until he found his “proper method of disposal.”
Why does Francis burn up these contacts?
What does he mean when he says, “proper method of disposal”?

  1. Francis burns up these contacts because he says in the book “Now each day when I wake up, I know that this might be the day when Larry Lasalle will show up and I start to close doors.” What he means is that he wants to kill Larry Lasalle which means there will be consequences. He is closing metaphorical doors to his future. He is being secretive to protect himself and his plan. He can’t be in contact with these people anymore.
When Francis says “I knew what he meant by disposal because I had already planned my own method after my mission was completed.” What he means by that is he knew how he was going to kill his enemy, Larry Lasalle. When he got out of the hospital, he wanted to go find Larry and kill him. He ahd to plan on how he was going to dispose of him.

Francis burns up these contacts because he does not want anyone to know that he is even there, in Frenchtown its says in the book on page 84 that he doesnt want anyone to be able to identify him as Francis because when Larry comes around he will take out Larry and know one will even know that it was Francis who killed him.
When Enrico said that he was going to the veteran hospital and that he was going to find the proper method of disposal. this means that he is going to find the right way to get rid of himself. I know this because disposal mean to get rid of so therefore he is going to wait till he finds a good time and way to pass away or get out.

“Crack, crack.” Went the flames as they burned the contacts Francis had. Why Francis was burning these contacts is because Larry LaSalle will try to find a place to help him heal. Francis doesn’t want to leave Frenchtown, not when Nicole Renard just returned. “I start to close doors to the future.” explained Francis as he realized as he doesn’t see Francis Cassavant anymore, but a stranger in his reflection. This is like a book I read about a Holocaust survivor who couldn’t recognize herself after the war. This proves war can cause damage on you and effect the way you see yourself after words.

“I’ll be in one of them until you find the proper method of disposal.” As Enrico told Francis before he left England. What Enrico means by ‘proper method of disposal’ is a way to get rid of something and no one can get their hands on it ever again. “The smell of ashes fills the air.” It’s like ashes of souls perishing in an open fire and the souls are the hospital lists burning in Francis sink. I believe if someone found any of these pamphlets, they’d take Francis away and he’d never see Nicole Renard’s face again.

  4. On pages 102-104, Francis has an internal conflict. He cannot decide whether or not he wants to kill himself by throwing himself off of the tallest steeple. But, Francis sees all of the graves that are separated from the others. The separated graves contain the bodies of people who had killed themselves, rather than dying heroically in the war. After seeing the graves, he decides not to kill himself because he would ruin his family name. On page 104, Francis says, “I could not die that way. Soldiers were dying with honor on battlefields all over the world. Noble deaths. The deaths of heroes. How could I die leaping from a steeple?” This means that Francis doesn't want to die a coward and be considered weak. I wonder why he wanted to jump off of the building.
When Francis decided he was going to kill himself, it was like being hit in the stomach with a hammer. Even though he was a fictional character, I still felt bad for him. My opinion on the matter is that he should not have tried to kill himself. First of all, he would have ruined his family name. Also, he feels like it would be easier to die in battle than a coward. On page 113, Francis says, “ “I went to war because I wanted to die,”…”I was too much of a coward to kill myself. In war, in a battle, I figured it would be easy to get killed.”” Unlike Francis, most men do not go to war to kill themselves. Men go to war simply because they want to win or simply because they were told to.

  5. Francis burns these contacts because he wants to get rid of all past traces of his life. He wants to move on and not think about the past. Francis burned two things, one was Enrico’s hospital lists and Dr. Abrahams telephone number. Francis just wanted to move on and not see anything of the past. This is shown when he says “goodbye Enrico”. He doesn’t want to get reminded of what happened during the war, nothing at all.
When he says “proper method of disposal” he means killing himself. He doesn’t want to kill himself but have a proper method of disposal. When he saw the grenade he knew it was perfect because it was a perfect way to kill himself. The only reason he is still alive because he is on a quest to kill Larry LaSalle. I can tell he meant this because he says “I had already planned my own method after my mission was completed”

Francis’s face went up in flames. Francis burns up his contacts with a list of hospitals he planned to go to, for a reason. This reason was because he never wants to know that his face will never be the same. Also, he doesn’t want people to recognize him after he kills Larry LaSalle. One quote that supports me is found on page 84, is states, “I don’t see me anymore, but a stranger slowly taking shape.” This means that he does, and never will, recognize himself ever again, so there is no point. Another quote that supports me is found on page 84, it states.” What matters is hiding my face from others…but so that they won’t identify little Francis Cassavant…after you carried out my mission.” This means that another reason he didn’t want the contacts anymore to get his face was so the people would not recognize him after he kills Larry LaSalle. This reminds me of when I watch WWII movies, and the veterans get rid of things that help them, because they are depressed from losing a body part. This relates because they both get rid of help because they are depressed and believe there is no point in getting help.

Francis is getting ready to die. When Francis says, “Proper method of disposal,” he mean one thing. This means that he is looking for his proper method of committing suicide. One quote that supports me is found on page 85, it states, ”I knew what he meant…because I have already planned my own.” This means that he is going to kill himself, just like his friend, in a planned manner. Another quote that supports me is found on page 84-84, it states, “Until I find my proper method of disposal.” This means by insight that the “disposal” of himself, hence killing himself, only planned, not just pull the trigger. This reminds me of the time I was watching a TV show, called “Lost” because on this episode, this one guys plans his suicide, because he feels like nobody loves him, and that he lost his legs, he has no point in life anymore. This relates to Francis because they both feel useless because of their injuries.

  7. The eraser wipes clean the board, making room for a whole new life, a whole new person. Francis burns up the contacts he got from Enrico and the information he got from Dr. Abrams because he wants to rid himself of his old life, of Francis Cassavant. He does this in order to perform his mission of murdering Larry LaSalle without a hitch, along with murdering the painful memories of Nicole, his injury, and the past. Very early in the novel, Francis states,” At that moment, I knew that I was really anonymous, that I wasn’t Francis Joseph Cassavant anymore but a tenant in Frenchtown.” This quote truly explains Francis’ want for an anonymous way of life, a way of life that can rid him of dreadful memories of the past. Francis is like many other war veterans with memories of the past hoping to be erased. However, Francis’ memories before the war are much more powerful than the ones that occurred while fighting.
Life is a sacred thing, but it can be snapped like a twig in an instant. What Francis means by saying, “proper method of disposal” is that after he kills Larry, he will take his own life. After the assassination of Larry has been finished, Francis will have nothing left to live for, he finds. This results in the ultimate end to his plan - suicide. In the book, it states,” The truth is that I don’t care whether I heal or not. Because I know that it doesn’t matter.” Francis saying this supports the fact that he has lost all hope and is going to take his own life after his mission is finished. Many cancer survivors are astonished at why suicidal people take their own lives. Those with cancer pray for just even one more day, while those who are suicidal want it all to end. I hope that Francis can have a mindset like those who look on the bright side of things, even with cancer. He should learn that the past is the past, and a whole new world of experiences awaits him, despite the demon of the past luring over his shoulder.

  8. Francis burned all of Dr. Abrams' information and medical records because he doesn't want anyone else finding out he is up and walking. Francis wants to kill Larry personally without any intervention and the medical records he had would've given people clues about his identity. On pg. 84 Francis says "... so that they won't identify little Francis Cassavant." this means that Francis burned it all to cover his tracks so no one not even Larry would know of his actions and current plan.
"Until I find the perfect method of disposal..." Enrico is saying that he entrusts Francis with the records until he can find his own perfect methods which won't leave any evidence. Francis burns them then says goodbye to Enrico. When Francis says he has plans of his own disposal after his mission he meant how he would end Larry. If Francis succeeds he will need to finally "dispose" of Larry so Francis will have revenge.

  9. 1. Francis burns up the contacts because he realizes he will not not need them any more after he kills or gets "revenge" on Larry Lasalle. But, by doing this there also might be a consequence. And also by burning the contacts it sparks an idea/ plan yo get at Larry. Even though he wants to kill Larry "karma" might occur and something bad while happen to Francis.
    2. When Francis says "proper method of disposal" he means a proper way to kill Larry Lasaelle. He did not want to have the wrong plan to kill Larry. He wanted to give him what he deserves. So he thought on different ways to "dispose" of him

  10. When Francis came out of the hospital, he may have lost his face, but hasn’t lost his feelings about killing Larry. When Francis burned Dr. Abram’s address and telephone number, and Enrico’s list of veteran’s hospitals, I think it was because he felt that he didn’t need all this special attention. Also, that he just needs to do what he has to do, as in his mission to kill Larry, and make sure no one sees his face, so they will not carry him out as the person that killed Larry LaSalle, the towns’ savior. “The truth is that I don’t care whether I heel or not. Because I know that it doesn’t matter. What matters is hiding my face from others, not only to save them the shock of seeing a face in disrepair but so that they won’t identify little Francis Cassavant later on, after I have carried out my mission.” I feel like Francis is becoming a monster on the loose. He wants to kill Larry LaSalle, and he just destroyed the one way he can call for help, if he ever needed any. I think he will regret doing that because, he may feel reckless now, but later on, he’s going to need help, whether it’s emotionally, or physically.

The definition of disposal is to throw away, or to get rid of something. I think Enrico is talking about how he has to find a proper way to hide Francis’s new face, as if he were trying to get rid of it, but in a proper way, not a way that will be too challenging for Francis, something that is presentable to others. “Until I find the proper method of disposal.” I knew what he meant by disposal because I had already planned my own method after my mission was completed.” I think Enrico was just trying to help Francis have a normal life again, and try to avoid any drama to his life. Just like when I have no clue what to wear to school some days, my friends help me so I feel more confident going to school in what I am wearing, kind of how Enrico is trying to help Francis look proper in public, and dispose his new face as much as possible.
